The IRS will grant these individuals an extension of up to 15 days to file their tax returns.

Most Americans have an April 15 deadline to file their tax obligations, but taxpayers in seven states can obtain an extension. Residents of Florida and other states in the southeastern United States will have more time to comply with their tax obligations. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that, due to the damage caused by Hurricane Milton, the deadline to file tax returns and make payments has been extended to May 1, 2025. This extension applies to both individuals and businesses in the affected areas, the agency confirmed in a statement. The measure is part of a coordinated response by the federal government to recent disasters in the southeast. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was responsible for officially declaring the affected areas, which activated the disaster tax relief package. According to the IRS, all taxpayers with tax domiciles in locations recognized as disaster areas by FEMA automatically qualify for the benefit, without the need to submit an application. The states included include all of Florida, as well as Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Tennessee and Virginia, according to IRS Bulletin FL-2024-10. The extension also applies to those who had previously received an extension to file their tax returns for fiscal year 2023. However, the IRS clarifies that this extension does not cover tax payments for 2023, which were due earlier. Beyond the extension, the IRS offers other forms of support for taxpayers impacted by the disaster. One of the main ones is the possibility of accessing a disaster loss deduction, applicable to damaged or destroyed property not covered by insurance or other compensation. This benefit can be claimed on both the 2024 and 2023 tax returns, at the taxpayer's option, according to IRS Publication 547.

The deadline to claim this deduction is October 15, 2025.
